Why do some of the grays not take the application?

Occasionally this happens to me, where a good amount of the gray hair didn't take on the color.   Does the hendigo need to be rubbed in hard to the hairs when applying?

No, rubbing it in isn't necessary but you can massage gently (just pressing, really) the paste to get it to saturate the roots.  The dye travels into the hair via the liquid in your mix. If your mix is too dry it may be pulling away from the roots. Prewashing with dish soap just prior to your application to towel-dry (damp) hair is helpful.

It takes a LOT of paste to get good coverage too. Like Carrie said, I'd make sure your paste isn't too dry, maybe consider adding CMC or pudding to make it more smooth, and REALLY pile it on. The goal is to have enough paste that flows well enough to move freely around each hair, and have it be thick enough that it doesn't drip. Its a delicate balance!
