pH and dye release timing of different liquids

Always use liquids that are near room temperature -never hot or boiling. Dye release times are given based on paste standing at controlled room temperature. If the temperature is higher, dye release will be faster. Please also keep in mind that different varieties of henna will have varying dye release timing. These times are only to be used as a guideline.

  • lime 2 – 2.3
  • lemon 2 – 2.6 -- (Dye release time 8 - 12 hours, can be upwards of 48 in some cases)
  • blackberry tea 2.7 – 3
  • vinegar 2.4 – 3.4
  • rosehip tea 2.8 – 3.1
  • red wine 2.9 - 3.9
  • cider vinegar 3.1 -- (Dye release time 8-10 hours)
  • mandarin tea 3.1 – 3.2
  • orange juice 3.3 – 4.1  -- (Dye release time 7-10 hours)
  • lemon tea 3.4 – 3.6
  • apple juice 3.4 -- (Dye release time 6 - 8 hours)
  • black tea 4.8 –- (Dye release time 3-6 hours. This can depend on how strong the tea is made!)
  • coffee 5.5 (Be careful! Caffeine can be absorbed through the skin!)
  • aloe juice 6 – 6.8
  • rooibos tea 6 – 6.5
  • sage tea 6.5 – 7.2
  • chamomile tea 6.5 – 7 -- (Dye release time 1 - 4 hours)
  • linden tea 6.7 – 7.2
  • water 7 (neutral pH- can give immediate dye release but may not give as rich of a color as the mild acids listed above)
