For me this is interesting and weird phenomena - this guy amputed his fingertip. Voluntarely. And now tattooed missing nail so it looks like 'normal'.
For me this looks like that this was the normality that bothered him and that he removed from his body. So what he did - removed a body part that was either disturbing him or he didn't want to have. It is a tricky to get what self-amputees think when they do what they do and why. Usually they sat they felt imperfect with this limp or body-part and what they wanted to achieve was the bodyly perfection.
With the act of tattooing missing nail he seemed now to restore this missing normality that was removed.

Here is the point I can say - I don't quite get it. Really.
