♦ Does anyone know how to alter henna mixture or treatment to change dye potential for dark brown hair? ♦

If you start out with naturally thick dark brown hair, and want to end up with plain-to-see red highlights and auburn shades that show up in virtually all lighting conditions, but don't want to use bleach or non-natural ingredients at all, what can you do? What are your options?

Is there something you can do to the mixture of lemon and henna, or a way of changing the treatment application so that the vibrant red color seen fresh after application *doesn't* fade after two or three days?

If not, is there something one can add to the mixture so that Henna's bright red color stains dark hair better?

The quick answer, bummer that it is, is no, not really. You do need to lighten first, and while there are some natural methods, IME they don't work very well on dark hair.

When the henna darkens on your hair, its oxidizing and there's nothing you can do to stop it.

There's nothing you can add to to make the henna redder. It is red. You're just looking at your natural color through it. Since henna is a translucent dye, you really can't get bright red without lightening first.

Hi Jen thanks for your reply. You said that there are some natural methods of lightening dark hair, albeit not very effective, surely it might be interesting to know about them.

Would you happen to know of any?

There used to be a thread detailing a few methods, but I can't find it to save my life! Hopefully someone with first hand successful experience with some of those methods will come along and give you more. I did find this thread at the Long Hair Community forum that has a LOT to say about the honey method. forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php
