The traditional North African dancer: her clothing, her makeup, and her henna

Perhaps not what you expected.  Here's what she was REALLY like about 100 years ago, probably Algeria or Tunisia.  Enjoy!

She has hennaed her hands perhaps 2 weeks before this photograph was taken (you can see some growth in at the cuticle where her nails were last hennaed. There is some pattern betwen her middle knucle and her fingertip.  Her thumb pad is still stained very dark.

Extreme eye makeup!

If she had a chin tattoo, its been obscured by the flaws of a very old photograph, or the photographer tried to airbrush it away, for the sake of European aesthetics.

Isn't she lovely?  isn't she totally different from what we conceive as "traditional bellydancers"?
