why did my henna paste go bubbly?

hi everyone

i mixed up a batch of henna paste on sunday to use for body art, i used lemon and sugar in my mix after the dye had been released i mixed it again to put into the cone, but there were bubbles in it, like u make bread, its like it had fermented, i used fresh mehndi powder too, from pakistan i bought recently hope u understand my problem what went wrong? this has also never happened before

i used bottled lemon juice and table sugar.

Hey, that's a good question!

Some hennas are ground with limestone millstones. LIttle bits of limestone may be in the henna. Adding lemon juice makes it fizz up a bit like a baking soda volcano! No harm done, you can stir it back down and go about yer business.

so THAT's what happened to me a while back!  I did use it just fine, no problems, but that makes rather elegant chemical sense.  Another mystery solved. . .
